I've been getting hits for last week or so from IP 66.249.66.9 and the UA identifying itself simply as "GoogleBot/2.1"

Is this RIP "Googlebot/2.1 (+http://www.googlebot.com/bot.html)"?

I noticed this yesterday for the first time. You're right, this one is different.

Yup, last dropped by just a few minutes ago. It would be interesting to know if it signifies any changes.

At some point we are going to be seeing a "Supplemental Googlebot" running; one that we are led to believe will verify listings in the Supplemental Results and flag them for deletion as necessary. I am hoping that this is it (but have no way of knowing what it actually is until Matt Cutts actually says anything).

He has hinted several times that "Supplemental Googlebot does not run very often" which I think was actually doublespeak for "we are still designing the blighter and will have it running in a few months time" - and that was a couple of months ago now...

Its the actual name change thats interesting: Why name a Supp bot "GoogleBot/2.1" that quote "does not run very often"

IMO I think annej is closer to the mark >> "It would be interesting to know if it signifies any changes."
