Is there a sandbox effect for new pages?

It used to be that when I wrote a new article it was always found in just a few days. On top of that it inherited some page rank and usually ranked well right away.

Not I find the new page shows up briefly in a good position just like I would expect, but then it disappears for a while. Finally it gradually gets back in the serps and very slowly crawls up.

It's not for as long as the sandbox experience a lot of sites get but I wonder if there is any relationship between the two.

I guess no one else is experiencing this. I wish I could figure out what caused it so I could prevent it if possible.

What happens is the bots crawl the article site see the new articles and boost them briefly due to the link value... but due to webmasters abusing links.. a dampening filter is then applied by the other bot to pull new content back down.

If the news is immediately relevant IE Hurricane Katrina the filter does not apply from what I have found. This is due to the amount of inbound links and press the the incident receives.

While your posting an article is new fresh and relevant in the grand scheme of things to search engines..... it isn't......

annej, Right now, I see no inherited PR (at least no toolbar PR). That's the case for me new pages added to the index in the past 4 weeks or so.

If I look at the SERP's, I DO see positioning that suggests "real PR" exists for the page but positioning seems even more affected by dc switches than older pages (I see a search result in my logs but can't duplicate it, next day the positioning is back, then goes, then returns).

I think its all part of the switch to BD and will likely return to normal when (if?) things settle down across all dc's.

Guess the question will be if the BD algo will still apply the "freshness advantage" or if it will be dropped. Seems unlikely they would, as it does generate better results.

I believe I'm seeing the same thing for my new pages, and because of this, I seem to have lost any motivation to create any more new pages.

So I'm kind of stumped and at a standstill here, not knowing what to do. I've just been doing minor tweaks, because I'm afraid to touch anything.

Create content becuase it attracts visitors and traffic from all search engines, and wait for Google to catch up in terms of the ranks.

I have found the same thing with most new articles. The better the site ranks the better the new articles do rank for me once they do.
