After 4+ months, it appears our previous rankings have now been restored. Noticed a rapid climb about 18 hours ago, first on what would appear to have been non-BD data centers; then spreading to BD data centers.
Coinciding with this, site:www.domain.com now shows our home page as the first listing instead buried on page 13 of results. Cache for home page is current. Toolbar pagerank remained static throughout the whole ordeal.
I really don't think anything we've done over the last few months since implementing the http:// to [www...] 301 redirect and the consequent loss of rankings 24 hours after has contributed to the "fix" - something just clicked in G and we're back where we were .... for now ;). I hope that others who were experiencing the same issues have had some joy too, if not, there's still hope and I wish you well.

At the same time, for the first time in too many months, site:www.domain.com shows the home page of my site as the first listing. It used to not even appear in the first 1000 results.
Interestingly, the supplemental problem for the site still exists. There are still thousands of supplemental listings for non-www pages although a 301 was put in place last July. I had always thought this was the cause of the lower rankings (for duplicate content), but apparantly not so.
I've got my fingers crossed this sticks.
