My site is doing ok in yahoo. Now I decide to make it more popular by ranking good in google. But it is really hard and I found it quite difficult to determine the effect of my changes, as the result comes slow.
Any suggestions?
the most important point to rank #1 in google
I'm in that club, so let me tell you what I did in a general way. There was some link development. I doubt that was as effective as other things. Develop your pages for your visitors. Adhere to common standards where applicable. This could include site navigation, accessability and usability standards, document validation, and more. Apply effective SEO techniques. Avoid known black hat SEO techniques. The number one spot is often an authority, become an authority.
I would say the most important point to rank #1 is to focus my attention on individual pages, thus developing a better site. Each page has a standard to meet, whether that page is fully dynamic or is completely hand styled.
You have asked a pretty big question!
But remember three main things:
1.Accessibility - is your site easy for the spiders to crawl?
2.Credibility - how many sites link to you? Google view each link as a vote of confidence. Are you a credible site with lots of votes of confidence from related sites?
3.Relevance - Is your copy relevant to the phrases you wish to rank well for? Make sure you have the right informaton in the right place.
Links are VERY important to ranking. But so is relevant content and site accessibilty. You won't rank well unless you have all three.

The answer is equally simple: Build the best site, as perceived by Google.
Exactly, I completely agree. When I think how to improve my site, I start to think what Googlers say about values of a site they find important. And what all other users would find valuable. I try to meet these expectations, link from authority sites, and often it leads my pages to #1 or top 10 of SERPs.
that alone to me suggests the total lack of energy needed for the passion of the task involved. Ranking number one is a meaningless statement. To rank number one for something somebody has to search for it to start with. There are no league tables for google. So if you havent even got to the point of asking how do i rank for this phrase or this sector and subject then nobody can really help you.
Perhaps the most useful thing to take on board with Google is the word 'organic'.
also how long do you want to rank for....a quick fix and the long term require different approaches and levels of patience....
If your site is out of the sandbox then it will be pure luck to get a #1 rank in Google depending upon the popularity of the keyword your going after.
Google has too many filters and is anti-seo so good luck....

if anyone knew exactly how to rank #1 on google the last thing they would do is tell everyone else how to do it.Why? Because anything that I've learned about being a webmaster was discovered here at WebmasterWorld.
The truth is that many people have willingly and freely shared the secrets that have allowed me to not only gain, but to hold that coveted spot for some time. Nothing personal, but the answer that waiman39hk seeks is in this thread. It is not feasible to focus on only one discipline (link building) and expect to achieve the results. I'm not saying it can't happen, but staying at the top spot takes more... ie, roll up your sleeves and work hard
Search Engine ranking is relative to the others in your space. My advice to you (in order of importance):
1. Make your site better than all others in your space.
2. Get other people in your space to link to you.
3. On an ongoing basis, continue to make your site better than everyone else in your space. (This should help you keep your #1 ranking)
I agree.
We do very well with our website

Wanna learn, you my friend are spot on.
It is duration that counts especially in unpredictable engines like google, your site needs to survive the ups and downs, mostly downs the way things are changing.
Perseverence will get you there in the end.

Pretty simple question. Are you sure that you're asking the right one?
I think the better question is how to get every page on your site to rank in the top 5 for a variety of related search phrases.
Look at your site stats. If your site is extensive you will find that just a fraction of your visitors come in through a search that includes key words for your homepage. Instead you will find people found your site through thousands of search words and phrases that brought them to a great variety of pages on your site.
Don't spend all your time working on getting your home page #1. Work on your site as a whole.
Brett wrote "find the core set of keywords for your topic area."
Diversify your keywords and you'll do OK.
However, this 1,800 page site now gets traffic from over 500 different two and three word searches every week, and it is thriving. Most of those "secondary" phrases hold a #1 or #2 -- but with every update some go up and some go down. And the important thing is that these secondary keywords bring in most of the sales, and not the more obvious targets.
As others have mentioned above, I think that is a healthy situation, because that is a sustainable situation. But we didn't achieve it right out of the starting gate. We did our best in the beginning, of course, but then watched our server logs. More and more we worked on those pages that were already being found on some phrase or other -- or even created new pages that were more focused on this or that phrase.
In other words, we let the market tell us what most of those secondary keywords should be. Server logs are the best place to do keyword research I've ever found. And it gives you something to do while you're waiting for time to pass.
The rest of my visitors come in through thousands of search phrases. It's mindboggling really.
Keyword domains are Hot and allways will be.
I have to disagree (on the longer-term prognosis) unless the keyword domain is memorable. Time will come when all search engines can judge a site's relevance based on more relevant factors. Keyword domains and links will become less and less important as time goes on.
Its not rocket science to work out that a link doesn't mean the linked site is relevant. Just means someones arranged something with someone somewhere half the time.
Likewise with keyword domains. $5 and you have bluewidgetsalesuk.com - then person b has bluewidgetssalesuk.com and guy c buys bluewidgetssaleuk.com etc etc. Aside from confusing the hell out of consumers, it won't always mean they all get great SERPS.
Sure - right now, both factors can inflate your ranking at most SE's. But its short-term...just don't employ ppl on the back of it!
Personally i think the future lies in user behaviour and consequently your content. EG: SERPS are returned, user clicks #1, comes back and clicks #2 then is never seen by Google after that. #2 picks up brownie points, #1 loses them - obviously a way simplified version but you get the idea.
Cheers

Don't copy content from other Web sites to use on yours.
And if you don't have any ideas to build your content, then become an intelligent good artist.
Remember what Steve Jobs said in 1996: "I mean Picasso had a saying he said good artists copy great artists steal. And we have always been shameless about stealing great ideas ehm ..."
