This being said, can you use another site to jump past someone. Example You have abc domain. That domain was set up in 2003 to sell plants. You are being beaten by a site established in 2000 that sells plants. You guys are duking it out 1-2, and you cannot get to #1. Again, everything else seems pretty equal.
However, you have a fairly generic site set up in 1998 that sells kids toys. Could you optimize that site for plants, set up backlinks and sneak ahead of your competitor?
Is age value for the domain, or for the content? I would guess domain, because content should change over time.
TIA
Just for an example, we get a new client with a website that has been running for years and wants it redesigned/optimised. We do this and then post a news release about the work that we have done on our own (well established) website.
A week or so later our website will show up higher up in the serps for a keyword relating to the topic of our new client than the clients website. This will stay like this until after a few months more work with the clients website.
This is because, in my opinion, search engines 'trust' our website, the history (age) of the domain is more than likely a factor in this trust.

I believe this is because the topic of your website is not the press release about this particular client. This is your content.
Your topic (or theme) is, probably, the press releases about different sites and Google seems trust your opinion.
