How would you define a term?

This isn't (honestly) meant to be a trolling thread and I hope that members will participate in the spirit of WebmasterWorld.

There are obviously those who believe in a sandbox and those who don't. This is meant for those who do and is an effort to pin down exactly what you are talking about, as there seem to be many different views on what it might be (and, whenever I've tried to define it in another thread, people object to "talking semantics").

I'm also not one to tell others to butt out of a thread, but it would be preferable if people who believe in a sandbox gave their views here. All the answers are picked from views expressed in previous sandbox threads by sandbox proponents.

It would be nice if you picked one answer that is closest to what your opinion is:

1) How long does a sandbox last?
a) only a short time
b) a random variable time
c) variable, it depends on what topic it is on
d) a long time (year or more)

2) What does a sandbox affect?
a) potentially any site (sites can go in and out)
b) all new sites and any sites that have had big changes made to them
c) all new sites
d) all new sites in competitive areas
e) can affect new pages within a ranked site

3) Can you avoid a sandbox?
a) Yes, randomly
b) Yes, if you are in an uncompetitive area
c) Yes, if you know what to do
d) No

4) How do I know when it ends?
a) My pages suddenly rank where I think they should rank, based on my previous experience
b) My first visitors arrive in Google
c) My positions in Google start to slowly improve over a period of months

5) Does the topic affect a sandbox?
a) No
b) Yes, it is easier to avoid it in uncompetitive areas
c) Yes, it is longer in competitive areas

6) Do you believe it is possible, even if you are not currently aware of any methods, to ameliorate or to avoid the effects of what you term a sandbox?
a) no, because...
b) yes, because...
