125,000 pages disappeared over night!

Hi All

I'm one of those guys who sit and read the content but hardly ever post. I have to say the stuff I read here has been a massive help to me.

We have 3 sites up all listing large amounts of part numbers for items, each part number links to a separte page generated from a database for that part number. We had about 166,00 pages, between the sites, indexed in Google. I had been that way more or less for 18 months.

I had been worried about duplicate content, but we seem to have come through all the updates so far without too much loss. BUT on the 23rd JAn one site went from 25,000 to 174 pages over night, and yesterday (13th Feb) one of the other two went from 80,000 to 874 and the remaining site went from 60,000 to 11,000, all with attendant loss of traffic and enquiries from customers.

Have I missed anything big that has been going on. I've been wondering what this big daddy datacentre thing was about, would this cause the sort of drop I'm seeing.

Can anybody give me any info.

You probably are experiencing the differenct between the Bigdaddy index and the Non-Bigdaddy index.

It seems Google is building a completely new index for the Bigdaddy update.

You can have a better idea if this is the problem by checking your sites on the following Data Centers:

[72.14.207.104...] - Non-Bigdaddy

[66.249.93.104...] - Bigdaddy

Do a site: search and see how many pages show up on each of the Data Centers.

I started a thread here: [webmasterworld.com...] to discuss the problem.

So far not many people have had much to say even though it seems to be a widespread problem.

You are right. The old number of pages appear on the non-bigdaddy DC.

No not a scraper site. Just lots of part numbers with their own pages on 3 sites.

I have had that before but a few days later everything is back.

I'd say dupe issues, either page to page on the same domain, or similar enough pages between domains

I'm pretty concerned about dupe stuff.

I'm gonna wait and see what happens over the next week or so, with the number of pages, see if they come back.

Then, no matter what, I'm going to shuffle the part numbers round somehow and re-write the part number pages. URGHHHHH!

We run a Chamber of Commerce site and publish catalogs for different companies. The duplicate content is heavy because there are so many similar products. There is nothing we can do about it. We have just resigned ourselves to the fact that we have to advertise.

Page numbers have been up and down overnight, which, oddly enough, gives me a good feeling.

It's something they're doing not something I've done.

I was searching around here to since over the last several months notice a google search from my domain went from xx,#*$! to xxx results.

Depending what time of the day I try I get either or results. I tried those IPs and I am back to xx,xxx when using the Big Daddy ip. So I guess the big daddy update will do well for me.

At 4PM EST, my three sites went from ##,### pages indexed to low ### indexed (and ## for one)...

then, at 9:30ish EST, they went back to their original indexing...

now, its 9:50ish EST and they are back down to 4PM levels....

both non-BD and BD datacenters show the original ##,### indexing...

is this the tango or the waltz?

Sounds like that could be the problem if you have all parts on all 3 sites with same description. Check the site command in Google look for Supplemental Results. I have noticed when a site has too many SR then rank starts dropping--regardless of the fact that Matt Cutts claims that SR is not a penalty.

I woudn't wait for BD to settle down but change the descriptions on the 2 newer sites. Leave the first site that went online alone--hopefully it will not have SR penalities.

If all three have a lot of SR then also look for someone copying your data and mostly text from the home page. I had this happen to a client last summer--someone had copied the text on their home page and put it on 13 of their own pages and my client's site dropped out of site, PR went to 0, and almost out of the index. We had to send in DMCA reports to the host and Google and the renegade site disappeared and PR came back quickly to client's site--keyword rank was slower to recuperate. If this is your problem maybe you can catch it before too much time elapses.

Also make sure there are no session IDs if you are using .asp script as Google gets lost in them.

I'll take your advice Lorel. Been looking into to what to do about it for a while.

I inherited theses sites six months ago, been re-writing ever since. So a little more won't hurt.

Things do not look so good afterall. Since that last post above both IPs only show ### . The non-daddy is about 100 less.

i have a new site undergoing it's first spidering, BD shows 180k pages, non BD 2 pages.

bobsco, try querying google with API to see how many pages are really indexed.
