Does google index the alt="" attribute

Does google index the alt=" tag from the img src tag?

In a word, yes.

It is unlikely that alt text is indexed as regular content. It will be indexed more like a <title> tag (but with a lower priority). In other words, the longer the alt text, the lower will be the value of each word of that text. So, a short description will be ok but a long description will be no better. Also, it is likely that over-optimisation filters (if they exist) look at alt text too.

You can see Alt text in the snippet on SERPS... definately its indexed.
