Is it worth adding a blog and forum to an established authority site?
What are the Pro's vs Con's in terms of SEO/Google?

Regarding a forum, i'd add one note of caution. I added a forum and made the pages (whitehat) SE friendly. However, after some activity, i unmasked it from my robots.txt file so G could index it and i'm pretty sure i got hit with a penalty as the site:pages increased from 1,000 to 10,000 in the space of a few days.
It was just a one-off increase - since then, as you'd expect, its been gradual, but its worth bearing in mind.
