I just noticed on a small "niche" site I look after ( french language only ) one lone hit from "referrer gogole.fr" ..so thinking to find a "type in misspelling" domain registered by someone other than Google ...was somewhat surprised to find it resolves to google.fr ( which this morning was alternatly running the "research DC's" mentioned in another thread )..most queries were answered by "communication was cut by the remote server" as it went on /off line ..( BTW the results were when available the substantially the same as 18 months ago in the main ..so no "news" )

However the point of this post is ..the subject of registering "miss-type-ins" of your domain names ..or even that of competitors ..or "miss-type-ins" of keywords has been debated at length here in fora ( there is even a thread at the moment ) many do not think it worthwhile ..

Albiet google has the deep pockets needed to register as many "miss-type-ins" ( or "type in errors" if you will ) as they want ..and are now their own registrar this was the only hit from their "misstyped.fr" ( the domain normally gets around 1000 per day from the correctly spelt google.fr...given that "their" analytics systems are better than most of ours and they certainly have more data ..they considered it worth while for the "one in one thousand" traffic chance ( and to register google.fr is a lot more than the investment/purchase of the domain name as to be allowed to use the.fr they must have a french company with that name ..so actually the name is costing them at least $8000.oo to set up = the cost of first registration of the french company ..plus around $15,000.oo per year to keep the company operating ..normally under french law they would need a separate company for each "misspelling"..so I presume that the gov't hasn't changed the rules for them ..so that means ..

Large investement for that one in a thousand "error" ..

So they want to protect their 80% market share of search here against any errors and all comers even at this level of expenditure ..( register 10 mispellings here as dot FR and you have a hundred thousand dollar a year on going investment ) one wonders at the ROI.

Anyone else seen any "misspellings" of google that they use to "protect" their investment elsewhere?
