As part of a major upgrade to Google's video-search service, consumers will be able to pay to download and view videos, such as television shows, on their computer from Google content partners such as TV companies, according to the newspaper report. Google plans to announce partnerships with some major players, including CBS Corp. and the National Basketball Association, the report said.

It says amonsgt other things they will bundle the realplayer ( I wont comment here on "anti virus from symantec" ;)..watch out for realplayer ..it tries to stealthily install itself as the "default opener" for just about everything except the fridge..

If it realplayer is in the bundle ..install slow and carefull and put a regmon in first ..and back up your reg ..
( realplayer has trouble opening its own streaming .ram files sometimes and if it's the "default" you aren't gonna see/hear anything any other way without a "reg hack" )..

Now it's out in the open one wonders firstly about the new player and it's possible effects upon ones system( given they are teamed up with sony the rootkit kids ) and also the international access pricing formats and zone issues of the content ..at the moment zone 1 US content cannot play on zone 2 european machines and the content itself has steep price differences depending on the zone in which one lives ..ie:we pay more than the USA
If the system is zoneless "0" or open source that will be interesting as France s about to make the possesion or the programmation or the distribution or the developement or the posting about or the linking to or the merely talking to your neighbour about open source or linux madia players illegal and doing any of the aforementioned things punishable by upto 3 years imprisonment..yes owning linux will become illegal here on january 17th if the next law sponsored by Sony and Vivendi universal gets through the chambre des deputies..

and one will pay for these goodies how ..via which payment portal.

or may be it will be US only until they get it ironed out ..?

Yep, just got back from the Las Vegas CES keynote where Larry announced it all. Some shows (like I think NBA) are free, while others like Survivor will be US$.99 per episode. They also mentioned archived oldies like I Love Lucy, Star Trek and Brady Bunch Hmmm-hmm.
At CES if you didn't arrange for keynote tickets back in Dec, you were relegated to the "overflow" viewing area, which after being hustled from one Conference Room to another, to another, turned out to be NON-EXISTANT! Thanks a lot CES bozos! A CES lady was handing out last minute tickets but only to media - like THEY care! The only place to watch it via a live feed was in front of a 36" RCA plasma flat panel, standing room only, 10 deep in a major walkway about 3 blocks away. Apparently they thought fewer people would turn up to see Larry than Mr. Microsoft who spoke Wed?Thurs. but they were WRONG! They also blanked out the parts from the feed, where Robin Williams comes on stage and does a couple skits (apparently something to do with rebroadcasting contractuals).
He didn't say anything about Realplayer, they showed the pack (which is available for download right now at their pack subdomain) and it had their own proprietary player. Also they offered foxfire, and adobe, but no MSIE :-).
Otherwise nothing new in the presentation that I could tell.

I just lost respect for Google. They bundled the most hideous programs for me to maintain and keep from conflicting with other windows programs with firefox. One good does not out weigh 3 complete and blatant evils. Why bother with this? <regrets even reading the anouncement on a friday night>
