Google - Remove an outdated link

Manually removing "dead" links from the google cache

I have a question regarding the manual removal of links. I have roughly 20 pages that continue to show up in the google cache long after I removed them from the my site. Close to 9mo or more. I tried using the robots method with no luck.

Today I decided to try manually removing these links. At the site: [services.google.com:8882...] there is a link to "Remove an outdated link". I went through the process of adding the links I needed removed and then later noticed that at the top it states "...Please keep in mind that submitting via the automatic URL removal system will cause a temporary, six months, removal of your site from the Google index."

Now, does this mean that my entire domain will no longer appear in any google searches for up to 6mos? Or, does it mean that the googlebot will not visit my site for ~6mo and update any new pages?

TIA!
Charlie

Means what it says. Check thru the forums and library. I have heard nothing but nightmare stories about this tool.

Just be patient. I believe google is about to do something heavy about all this.

Try installing a custom 404 or a 301 redirect on these pages. Just don't redirect them all to one page. Pick the most relevant page.

Good luck.

Well, I went through the process of adding these pages to be removed already before I saw this little blurb at the top. It currently says they are all "Pending". Is there a way to reverse this? I don't see anywhere to undo this... I have sent a message to google support but haven't received a response. Help!

Pages are gone for six months, not the site.

I've read the horror stories but if you need reassuring, the removal tool worked fine for me. Some of the dead urls returned after 90 days, and I knocked them out again.

But I am very careful using it.

For you vets out there, it's like using Immobilon in horses and elephants.

One slip and you better have the IV antidote handy within 30 seconds.

Catch is: There's no antidote for the Google tool

I believe many of the mistakes in the past stemmed from folks trying to remove non-www versions of their site - as a shortcut for a 301 redirect. So many went in and removed:

foo.com

There is now a warning that states this will result in all pages from the site being removed for 180 days - www versions as well as non-www versions.

ctiger2 - IMHO, if you used the url removal tool for single pages that are 404 (dead links), you are just fine.

As the guys above have said, the url removal tool has been used in many ways over the past year, and there are some horror stories floating around out there.

BUT, your description of the way you used it seems fine to me. I did the same thing last week for a single page I wanted taken down quickly. The tool told me it was pending, and also informed me it might take 5 days to happen. After three days, I received a very polite e-mail from G, naming the exact page filename, and said that the url removal was complete. The remainder of the site is fine.

I think if you sit tight for a few days, you will find that all is well. Please keep us all up to date if something unpredicted happens :-)

Why does nobody ever mention the 410 error code whenever this subject comes up?

Why does nobody ever mention the 410 error code whenever this subject comes up?

Because the original poster did not ask about the 410.

He asked about the ramifications of the way he had already used the removal tool.

Webmaster World TOS asks us to stay on topic to the original post. Launching into explaining what he could have used INSTEAD of the removal tool is a moot point at this stage.

However, if you have something to say about the 410, then please say it, instead of criticizing other members for trying to be helpful.

Thanks for all the replies. I was hoping I wasn't knocking the entire site out of G, just the pages that I submitted. I received email confirmation today from G regarding these pages I submitted. I will post if/when I hear anything else from G.

Thx!

I wasn't trying to be critical cws3di. Perhaps it was just my turn of phrase. But I'm curious why to use the url removal tool at all if a 410 really works. I never see it mentioned, ever. Hence my curiosity. Is it that Google just ignores them?
