URL only appears

URL only appears, no title or description

Why do some entries in google search results appear as URL only (without a title/description)?

eg:
www.some-domain.com/
<Similar Pages>

whereas all other entries appear as:-
Title
Description
<Cached> <Similar Pages>

The HTML definitely has a title and description. Why isnt it showing on google?

There are at least two reasons I believe.
It happens when you delete pages in your site and they remain for some time in Google's index until they are finally dropped. (Happened to me.)

I think it also happens when Google finds new pages in your site but don't index them immediately. Like Google just marks the URL to return later and have a closer look.

It also happens when you have 2 pages of duplicate content on the same site. Usually one ranks and the other goes url-only.
