I'm real new to this stuff, so please tell me if I'm misunderstanding. I thought sites get top organic position by having the highest page ranking. I ran across a site today that had first organic position with zero page ranking. Will somebody please explain how this is possible?

Page Rank is only a part of the total Google algorithm. In fact, Page Rank has nothing at all to do with the actual content -- it's more like a measure of general "strength" for the page. That one element gets factored in along with lots and lots of other things, such as what text is in the page title and on the page, what text is in the anchor tags that point to the page from elsewhere, how long the domain and page have been around, and so on.
So, depending on the search query and how many other pages anywhere are involved in that same keyword area, the effect of Page Rank alone can be completely overwhelmed by other factors.

Plus page rank is a variable right now. I have a site that has it's [r jumping all over right now. One day, pr 1 next day pr3. Google directory stays same at 3 tho. Check and see if site is in g's directory and what pr it has.
