I guess I'm one of the unfortunate webmasters who has unwillingly paid a price at the hands of Jagger3 by losing 2 site completely from G....couple things here...

I know I should wait till after the update and pray for my 2 sites to get re-indexed.....has anybody else lost a site or more during this update?

Does anybody have a past experience, similar to above, they could share? Moreover, how long did it take to get re-indexed, if at all? And was there any method carried out, other than just waiting around?

Just looking for a bit of light. Thanks

On Oct. 27th, my main site disappeared completely from the serps--grey bar, site:www.mysite.com didn't return anything at all and I lost 70% of my traffic.

That day, I sent a reinclusion request, got the standard form letter back, to which I replied. No one ever responded, but happily, just yesterday my site returned. Some pages are lower than they've ever been, others are just great.

The lesson for me was I finally got off my ass to find other ways to bring traffic so Google doesn't control my life(um, at least not so much).

quite rediculous how most of us are puppets.....

hmmm, i wonder if the re-inclusion email you sent actually did the trick? What does the standard, initial repsonse from google say?

Flobaby,

On the 27th I too lost most of my traffic. I have not been able to figure why. Would you be so kind as to tell me what you found to have been the possible reason that you lost traffic at that time. Sticky mail me if you do not wish to post.

Thank you.

yep J3 hit me on 3/11. I've not lost all my G traffic just all my money terms - The reason I got dropped I'm 100% sure was because of links, as I'd been involved with linking for years as I had a small directory and for people get listed they needed a link back to me, so I've got 1000's of sites linking to me which in my eyes is enough with G's new anti-linking policy to get me buried. As for trying to recover, it really would be a case of getting all the webmasters to remove the links and I just don't see that happening so I'm leaving the site and excepting that I won't get any strong traffic from G again. fortunately Y & MSN like me a lot and they are pulling in some traffic which is just about paying the bills

I didn't have any blackhat stuff, so I'm thinking my site just tripped a filter of some sort.

The initial Google reply to the reinclusion is useless, basically for those that don't have a clue, it gives you a couple links to their help files. BUT, I think anyone that's site has gone should definitely fill in the request anyway.

tigger,

I am not sure it is the directory that has given you problems. I have a directory also and I actually improved slightly in the SERPs. The only difference is that I do not require a link back. What I do is if they link back to my site (optional), I give them "sponsor" status which lists them higher in the directory. So far I have about 50% of the listings linking back to me.

I have discussed this in other threads. I believe that there might be a penalty or degration of directories that require a link back, but it might be on a sliding type scale. Maybe if you started contacting the webmasters (yes, I know it would be a pain) and asked to have your link removed, it would help. I don't know what else to tell you. Could G be looking at text on your submit page and noting that you require a link back? That would be pretty tough to do. I personally never had a problem with too many incoming links. I have another site that requires a link back that lost a few spots, but nothing as drastic as what happened to you. Problem is that there are a lot of factors blended in the mess. It might be a combination of things.

Just trying to help :-)

cheers webdude, its maybe worth a shot but I think its G's way to get the directories out of its serps. daft thing is the site was only originally set up to help my clients get a bit of traffic that didn't want and marketing work done - sometimes you just can't win

Question for you. Is the site strictly a directory or is the directory part of a larger site? This may be important because on my big directory, even though it is quite popular, it is not the main focus of the site. It is there for the use of visitors to find more information. The site also has a forum, image database, chat room, localized search engines, submitted articles by pros and users, etc.

its a directory with a couple of folders with smaller sites within it but 80% of the site is a directory

I believe that there might be a penalty or degration of directories that require a link back,

That would make a lot of sense, except for the fact that it would be so difficult for Google to know which directories insisted on reciprocal links. More likely, Google would just evaluate the link patterns and give less credit (or no credit) for large numbers of reciprocal links, which would have the same effect in the end.

I highly doubt a link partner page would hurt you in any engine. Provided of course the links your swapping are tightly related and of value to real users. As long as these two criteria are met, no way this is the cause.
