Ok, to most people here, this is going to seem like a stupid question but I don't know the answer...

How do I find out what sort of Googlebot activity has been going on in my site? I have looked everywhere in my stats but can't find anything!?!

Some analyzers will do it, but at the very worst you can open the logfile with wordpad and search "googlebot".

lee_sufc - what stats package do you have? Perhaps we can tell you where to look if we know what you've got.

You can see this two different ways:

Under Browsers (expand the menu)

You will find:

Robots Tags (Description) The Robot Tags report details the information sent by the web browser to the web site when a request is made. From the browser tag it is often possible to work out which search engine or web directory the client is supporting.

You also get some information in the Browsers Tag.

almost all servers are configured with awstats ..'cos its free ( but frequently the host company thinks the set up is hard ..) they just need to switch it on ..

then you will have "a vary pretty stats package" and it'll be clear ..if a little basic ;)

If you have Google account just add the url in Google sitemap account you can get various kind of information relating to your site and what googlebot is doing.

Right Googlebot activity increases after submitting the sitemap to Google Sitemaps. Plus you will get free codes on the web which when pasted on your site and some on the server files, will shoot emails to a specified email address, with the perfect timing, date and URL visited. You can maintain this data and analyze it with your SERP's report.

I had a hit today from <http://www.corp.google.com>, I did a bit of searching on other blogs / forums and they seem to think that it is a recon visit from manual testers.

If I get any activity changes afterwards, I'll let you know.
