First few lines of article vs. summary of article

Would it be okay to post the first few lines of an article, up to about 200 characters, with links that lead to the full article. What I am worried about is getting a duplicate content penalty. All the articles were written by me and I want to make a page that contains the introductory lines of each article with links to each one.

The other option I am considering is making a page that has brief summaries of what each article is about that contains links to the full articles.

Does Google's duplicate content penalty extend to duplicate content on the same site? If so, which option would be better?

Looking forward to hearing opinions on this.

I'm currently using the following method:

Article Title - 58 characters of preview text

That being said, my entire primary site is listed URL only, and what is not URL only is supplimental :)

I have an articles page on my site that does describe the article in general NOT any direct content and it works fine for me. Fact is, that page has more pr than all but two others and carries the same rank as them.

Our two sites utilise an ingress to summarise the content of the linked page/article. One is unique, and summarises the article, the other site uses the first paragraph of the article.

Without a shadow of a doubt, the article that has a rewritten ingress performs better.

However, I would doubt very much if you would get a duplicate content penalty if you use the first paragraph word-by-word, as long as it's not too long.

We've experimented with various lengths, and ingresses of up to 250 characters have not triggered duplicate content penalties.
