If i sign up with a really popular host will that effect my rankings in google and other SE?

I see no correlation at all.
I see no advantage of one host over another.
Go back and study your own pages for their (de)merits etc. Hosts ain't it. -Lary

I've changed hosts, from shared, to virtual dedicated, (two different hosting companies) and witnessed no change in the SERPS whatsoever.

well....popular host=lots of sites=some dodgy sites=same ip=possible problem by associaton
never experienced this problem that im aware but have heard anecdotally that is can be a problem. Assuming shared ip or block of course.

which bit of the patent are you referring to .. ( unless of course you are confusing this with google as domain seller and google as hoster ..soon to be announced service )..

If you search for "google patent" in G there are plenty of articles that describe what they plan to do, including the hosting aspect.
