Hello all,

Sorry if you find this post silly, I'm still a "webmastering noob"...

Does Google penalize sites that contein directories with no index.html files in them, but contein just other directories that have a index.html?

Example:

widgets - directory on my site. It conteins other directories:

red_widget
blue_widget
green_widget

The widgets directory cointeins these three directoryes that have contetnt in them, but the widgets directory has no html file in its root. Maybe google doesen't like this?
I've heard storyes...

Are you saying you have no default files in your root strucutre ( index.htm, index.html, default.asp or whatever your webserver likes)?

So long as you have a homepage for your url, so www.whatever.com resolves to a page and that page has links to subpages (whether they are named as index.html pages or not) it doesn't matter. Google will not try and second guess your folder structure and look for index or default pages if there are no links to them.

There are many default pages that are available based on programming used. None of them make a difference in terms of getting listing. The spiders can crawl them all based on testing.
