would a 301 redirect to a new domain pass on back links

Hi,

I have to move my site to a new domain from a .com to a .co.uk

the trouble is that I have 100's of backlinks to my .com site, I wondered if I put a 301 redirect on my .com domain - would this pass on all the backlinks to my new domain? or would I have to try and get all my backlinks updated to the new domain?

I can't seem to find many answers to this question, and I am afraid that the answer will be to update all my links, which will be a nightmare job.
