Let's say the term is "widget". I look for the results on widget about 3 times daily: once in the morning at office start, once after lunch and once before I leave the office. The times I see different result sets are not the same, but the behaviour is:
First I see (all conceptional) for example "100 results" the second is REALLY higher, like "200 results"... after i have seen the higher one, a third appears, something like "125 results". And now I have seen a cycle in that, because after a while I see the "125" become the smallest, the bigger gets to something like "240" and the third that appears could be (e.g.) "135" - after about 2-4 days the cycle jumps to the next iteration.
I know, that this is based on the everflux and update daily freshbot behaviour and maybe not the standard for all keywords, but I find it interessting, that google sometimes knows much more results for a term (yeah, i know, sometimes too much ;-) ) and then steps back to a much lower figure again. I guess this is related to filters, which are applied on newly added URLs, which could be grouped together in a never ending calc after new URLs are found.
The timeframe for new sub pages on a well established domain, which shoot to the top for weaker keywords and then sink into the index is, by the way, the same cycle for me...
Means: i add a new page for "greenish widgets" and link to it from the homepage (PR7).. about 2 days later it could be (depending on the strength of the keys) that I find myself on #1 for 2 days and then I see it sink in... maybe down to SERP 10...
Any more actual thoughts on the everflux anyone? Because in these loooooong update cycles of google, using these effects got quite important, IMHO!
