My site has been the first of its kind, I drop off Google

For the past year I have experienced periodically being completely dropped off Google. My site has been the FIRST of its kind and is in all the natural search results on the first spot. I'm just a small business, but since spet of 2004 I have been vanishing off of Google every 6 weeks or so--recently it has been more often and for longer periods. Does Google discriminate against Older sites? Are they doing it so that we will advertise with them? Any help, advice, comment from a desperate single mother of 4!

I think so in some sectors, the site I noticed it on dropped in rankings yesterday.

Yes, I remember looking at those DC's when you posted and all looked normal to me around midweek.

So perhaps they do it by keyword/sector now to make less waves with the update?

Is this what people have reffered to a rolling update?

I saw some other people posting about "european travel" sites being hit.

SOMETHING big has certainly happened... A site that has been in the sandbox for over a year finally came out a few days ago.

But that five year old artistic site missing? - cannot understand the reasoning behind that one...

It's no update. It's a massive screwup.

I saw some competors disappear, but now poof, I've lost as many as 700 spots for some terms, always with the commonality that they have been apparently overwhelmed by a rush of dozens of scraped copies that are listed as Supplemental.

It appears Google has removed the cache from millions of supplemental listings, which has caused havoc with their already polluted index.

This isn't deliberate behavior. It's yet another mega screwup from the 80 billion dollar company.

4 year old rich content site, original content that I wrote, is wiped out from Google.

This is complete bull#*$!. I found several other foreign sites copying my content and using it to push viagra and other pills.

What do I have to do, put my text up as an image?

IF google can't figure out the difference of who is original and who is BS (free hosting websites) - then they are paying way too much for their engineers. My domain doesn't expire for 5 years, and they think I am the spammer over junk sites and free hosting websites?

I hope MSN does buy AOL and slaps the crap out of Google. It's ironic that I stopped using Google about 3 weeks ago when I got tired of not being able to find what I was looking for.

Free servers are where I have about 15 genuine hobby sites that have been there for around 8 years so why exclude the?

Incidentally there must be an update going on since the traffic on some of my sites suddenly halved, and we are talking about 5000 or so google sent visitors a day, and one site that was getting 20 per day for a year got 2500 yesterday? Extremely strange.

When someone using a free webhosting site copies my 4 year old domain that doesn't expire for 5 years, it should be obvious to Google engineers who is the original website, and who is copying the content - without even a human looking at the page.

I'm not suggesting that free hosting sites/pages get dropped or punished.

Google Engineers: Over rated, over paid, and under worked.

Their egos are writing checks their skills can't cash.

Yeah. We've seen an upward movement on a new site (jeez I only did one new site in the last 5 months?) that was lying dormant and we've just started building the content about 3 or 4 months ago.

But the downward movement in serps is weird, very weird.

Hopefully it will sort itself out by Monday -- biggest day of the week.

I lost four major sites but I don't know if they were manually penalized or if it's part of this update.

Many seem to have lost their top positions. What kind of sites have taken your place on top? What does Google favour now?

I don't track keywords that much as site has broad scope. However, I noticed a big change in what sub domains popup when you do a search on the site name.

Seems to have went back to what it looked like in the spring, with our most busy ones not listed anymore.

I think it would be helpful to hear a clear word what's really going on. I wonder why Brett stopped the update thread "till something more definative comes up".

For me this is really definitive: I lost all rankings in Google with my most important site.

It is really weird this time. Very, very weird.
