I have a newbie site (about 6 months old) in which I have been extremely aggessive in obtaining reciprocal links and one way inbound links etc....
Here is my question. I am seeing almost daily that Yahoo, MSN, AllTheWeb etc.....are updating my backlink counts almost daily. However the big G never changes.
So in these other engines counts are actually a true approx count of what I have where as big G is not.
My question is even though G's backlinks are not changing are they aware of these backlinks like all the other search eninges seemed to be?
Will they eventually come around and update the backlinks counts so it is current with all the other engine more accurate counts?
Finally do the serps change daily or weekly on G depending on ones linking strategy? How does that all work?
Is this a battle of linking strategy positioning in regards to Rankings?
I thank you in advance for your replies.
- Sites that are apparently in the Authority bracket seem to benefit quite fast by adding backlinks in SERPs. (Say about a week to 2 weeks)
- Sites that are not there yet, will take upto the next major update (I don't mean visible backlink update here), to benefit from the newly added links.
- Sites that are new and sandboxed can take next couple of updates to show benefits of adding links or rather come out of the sandbox.
Many argue over this - BUT I have tested this over and over using the "allinanchor" command and it seems quite reliable and I always carry out my tests manually. You may think this is nonsense but this is my take on it all. Yours may be different and I respect that as we are all dealing with different markets and PageRank.
Yes.
"Will they eventually come around and update the backlinks counts so it is current with all the other engine more accurate counts?"
No.
"Finally do the serps change daily or weekly on G depending on ones linking strategy? How does that all work?"
Daily. You get some credit for links immediately, as is obvious since new pages rank immediately. The full value of all your links, plus their genuine pagerank, etc., is a calculation that takes Google longer.
Will they eventually come around and update the backlinks counts so it is current with all the other engine more accurate counts?
I keep a record of the links Google reports and those of Yahoo and MSN for 30+ clients and the amount that Google reports is always about 3-10% of actuality.
As Google Guy explained elsewhere they keep a record of all links but only report a small sample.
Finally do the serps change daily or weekly on G depending on ones linking strategy? How does that all work?
I did a thorough analysis of competitors for a 3 word phrase I target for about 2 months, checking almost daily and also recorded their keyword density for those words, their PR and backlinks and other features. The various sites on first two pages of results bounced around considerably. My own went from #6 to #12 almost every other day and the keyword density was not changing on these sites either--which means there were no changes to these pages. I thus concluded this "dance" was Google tweaking something and not the sites themselves.
When I tweak the keywords for a site I have noticed that it will often go up a little bit one week and more the next and more the next without touching the site again i.e., SERPs appear to increase gradually.
Also the rate at which your site will change after you tweak the code/keywords depends on how often Google visits your site. If it only comes by every few weeks you have to add that to the time frame as to when you can expect things to change.
As Google Guy explained elsewhere they keep a record of all links but only report a small sample.Does anyone know why this is?
Not showing real PageRank and backlinks is the best way to make SEO work harder - that's the most obvious purpose. Why would Google make it easy to manipulate their SERPs?
So there is no such thing like backlinks results - the sample we see tells us nothing. The best way around to check what backlinks are know to Google is to check Google cache of pages linking to us, but the cache is stored by Google in different data structures than links so it's just approximate.
But backlinks from pages rarely updated by Google (with low PR and not frequently updated) are not much valuable anyway.
Is that still the case for the lower ranking sites that are not spiderd on a daily basis? Or what is the going rate on this now? That is, how link should I wait to expect to see the results from the date that the linking pages were cached?
External links may take time to mature. The pr passed on may increase over time (6 months +), but initially be only a fraction of the full potential value. This may be to discourage bought links and also be a part of 'sandbox' which thus applies to all sites, not just new ones.
A) Have a back link function at all?
B) Not just use mydomain.com -site:mydomain.com to check links?
A - we should ask GoogleGuy, but I guess it's more misleading for less experienced SEOs when it works improperly. If it didn't work at all, they'd notice it more quickly.
B - it shows pages with string "mydomain.com" except from site "mydomain.com", so it will show backlinks with domain name in anchor text, but will not show backlinks without domain name in anchor text and will show sites where mydomain.com occurs in text but without link.
Even though we do not see visually on google toolbar or google backlinks the actual work put in before the next update, the actual serps do change almost immediately or in a day or two on the search results.
With a more lasting effect in a couple weeks and even better once the actual update becomes visual.
So if you have several really great inbound links with very high PageRank and went out on an agressive reciprocal linking exchange program, changes should happen also immediately.
Do I have this right?
Please Advise.

Anyways internet is all about links/votes. Its a form of advertising and you do get points for it.
Paid links is another option. Even though I have not done it but I was thinking search engines do it, look at adwords, overture and others.....isn't that a form of paid links?
However I think the difference here is one is strictly a form of advertising while the other is going out to get links for popularity and PageRank.
But in the end isn't a link a link? How do you determine whats a good link and whats not?
