Why has my website vanished from Googles database

hello all,

i recently have had a problem with one of my long ranking 4 year old websites. it has been a long standing website with very good positions for top keywords. unfortunatly it recently vanished from Googles database during the recent update.

We cant work out whether or not this has happened due to the site having downtime for a day when Google did a recent update or it is for another reason.
the site does not show up in googles cache or if i type in site:websitename ...

Has anyone else had a problem like this?
Can anyone shed some light on our problem?

Unlikely to be downtime. This usually happens to sites that have been banned :(
