What are the thoughts regarding implications of these changes and what new strategies should be pursued for Google rankings?
If makes feel results a bit strange (something I don't like), but I like it more than I don't.
#1 you can get Google to pull this feature with many keyword combo's
#2 the middle bit is just the top 3 results from the suggested keyword combo.
example keyword "Tokenizer" pulls the See results for: tokenizer java
My guess is that Google have looked at the first Keyword and The Final Keyword searched for in a session..
so I search for Tokenizer but don't find what I was looking for and search for Tokenizer Java, if enough people do this it could influence the serps I guess.

If a single keyword is used just once to describe its target...then the regular UI will prevail...
here's some more:
"waterfront"
"garage"
"spring"
Now try:
"swimming" (images results pulled in at the top)
undoubtedly...many more..
Cool UI stuff coming out of Google ..
but wouldent this be more use at the top of the page as a "related searches" option?
Google wants to predict most likely results that you would click -- split screen for SERPs that belong to very different groups is an (I guess here) effective way to give overview of different results and let people decide where they want to drill in to.
Its called "ÅëÇÕ°Ë»ö""COMBINED SEARCH" (translated from Korean). and its the DEFAULT setting for all portals here. Its VERY conceivable that G is actually using the Korean market for a "test bed" and/or inspiration for some of these moves...as Korea is analogous to a HUGE local market with savvy and heavily wired netizens and its very inaccessible from outside korea (language barrier and other barriers [webmasterworld.com].
Funny. been in the Korean market for so long I forget what is "new" and not new stateside...I've been seen this for a while but didn't think anything of it. I'll look but I thought I saw even more than 3 stages.
Anyways as I implied, they do this on ALL portals here in Korea. MUCH more extensively. Remember Google is a SMALL and little though of search engine here. A VERY VERY VERY distant...7th? or so in terms of usage
I never really understood why portals and google DIDN'T do this stateside as its so easy and well...once you get used to the long page. Its VERY convenient.
check what it looks like from Naver (number one search engine in korea) for a (in korean):
yes, it looks very BUSY and confusing AT FIRST. But I have really come to appreciate it. I doubt Google will ever get THAT crazy with it (at least anytime soon), but mark my words....yahoo could do in a sec (they do it here) and I wouldn't be surprised if eventually other companies started adopting it.

[edit reason] no too specific search query links please [/edit]
1, each section is limited to a few spots, so you HAVE to make top 5 or else you are in trouble.
2. AND since web page search is NOT the most popular search type in korea, SEO results are limited AND dropped well below the fold.
in the example I gave in last post...web search is the 10th (!) section down.
Naver had a time with NO (NONE!) organic results on the first page of its results. And remember Naver is number one in search by a HUGE margin here.
imagine what that would mean to the people around here, for example.
+_+
Wow! Now, that is a search results page!
I recognized sections for books, blogs, music, graphics, "organic web," news, sponsored, and I think "Question Guide" (to use a GrendelKhan TSU term from a thread he referenced above).
If I could read Korean, I think I'd switch in an instant.
GrendelKhan TSU, can I customize the UI? Could I, say, remove the news section if I'm not interested, or move it to the top if I'm really interested?

I wouldn't be surprised if you've already sown some seeds of fear!

yah. and that's ONE of the many reasons google did not take off as is in Korea as it did elsewhere else.

not at naver or the major portals.
(I have seen a couple small unknown search sited do this...but can't for the life of me remember what they were called -- if they are still even around).
This is for pure business reasons. Most sections you can pay to get listed on and has prices relevant to their positions. If netizens to move it on the fly (or collapse the sections)...that's bad news for advertisers. Also, Overture pays BIG bucks in guarantees to make sure their listings are at the top.
I wouldn't be surprised if you've already sown some seeds of fear!
I hate to say it, but, imo, the day will come. sooner or later.
perhaps if people started learning how SEO type activities ARE done in Korea now ...they might be more ready for it. ;)
