my niche directory site since 1999 that always ranked very well has been suffering lately.

when I use
site:example.com

I get over 31,000 results.

when i use
site:www.example.com

I get ONE result (index/entry page)

does anyone have any insight on why this would be occuring?

thank you

Can't say for certain if this is your problem but a lot of sites have been affected by Google seeing the www and non-www as duplicates. This is worth a look [google.co.uk] i.e. the consensus here seems to be that you are better off redirecting (using 301) one version of the site to the other. In your case you'll probably want to 301 the www version to the non-www version.
