I've read and reread the requirements for the google sitemap. There website shows that sitemaps can be submitted in xml format.

My sitemap is 2.5 meg. To save on bandwidth, I compressed it with to a .gz extension. In one of the examples on the google site, it shows a sitemap in .gz format.

When I submit mine, it did indicate there was a parasing error.

Can anyone confirm if they have been able to submit one successfully in this format. For now, I have resubmitted mine in .xml format.

Thank you

notbob, did you use gzip for compression and utf-8 encoding as suggested by Google at [google.com...]

You know, I just used gzip but I'm not sure what encoding it was. I just did gzip originalfile.xml and it gave me the output.

I found out that the php script that I am using gives an html output when run with the sitemap. Rather then saving the results into a text file with an xml extension, which is what I did, the author advised to simply submit the url to the php script as my sitemap.

This way google would always have a fresh sitemap...Once I did that, I did get a message from google saying successful submission
