Two Separate Domains Or a Subdomain?

Building 2 sites with similar topic, better for 2 separate domains?

I am creating two sites. I have 2 separate domain names already purchased for these 2 sites. One of these sites is a large subtopic of the other site. My questions is:

Is it okay to make a subdomain of site one (for example site2.site1.tld ... and then point the site2 domain name towards the subdomain. Or would it be better to have both site1 and site2 completely separate from eachother?

Rachel, I would recommend not to put your eggs in one basket. If you have a domain and for whatsover it happened that this domain is dropped from google index, you're risking all your subdomains; hence I would suggest two separared domain names.
