Some bright chap at backstage.bbc.co.uk has suggested getting folk (or companies/google) to attach news items on it - with articles placed at the location the event occurred at ( [backstage.bbc.co.uk...] ). So you could zoom in to any part of the world and see the current news items.

The overlays and stuff on this are great! I've added traffic updates for the Atlanta area, and radar/satellite weather updates for much of the rest of the country.

By the way I just saw this morning, ABC News used Google Earth to zoom in and show where the explosions occured in London. Sad use for it but never-the-less it's being used as a media tool.

This has such great potential as a mobile navigation tool. I truly think this is the next car navigation. Imagine as you drive it flys along where you are currently at. And offers dining, gas, etc suggestions, allows you to search for stops, plot your course, etc. Companies will bid, so when you drive through San Diego and look up a chinese restaurant, Wongs Chinese Food's ad will appear with a directions right to it. Very cool, can't wait!

I have to say this is the coolest software program I have ever used!

Yeah, this is the coolest and has enormous potential to change searching as we know it. Perhaps hook up with Traffic Master to get some real time traffic flow data in too.

Then roll on Google Mars, Google Jupiter, Google Saturn etc... ;-)

Great Idea (IMHO!) I just came up with. Living in Florida I know how important it is to follow the path of hurricanes. How great would it be for Google Earth to display weather, including hurricanes, in real time on Google Earth... maybe even animate its path. Wow the possibilites are endless for this great software. Thanks google!

Actually, that's being done already, although not animated. It's really quite simple to have GEarth pull a real-time weather radar onto your globe. Here are some examples:

I don't seem to be able to run the program on a wireless network

I have DSL wireless router using WPA encryption, when connected directly using RJ45 eithernet cables I have no problems using Google Earth however as soon as I disconnect the cables and use wireless the program fails to log in.

Its not a firewall issue on the router as this has been disabled.

Is their any reason why wireless can effect this? has any one else tried on a secure wireless network?

Hi, I've got a wireless network as well and what I found was I had to disable my Norton Internet Security otherwise it wouldn't work for me at all. Could it be that you too have some sort of Antivirus software running in the background as well?

It seems this could have a use for news agencies. Google should offer a rented unwatermarked version for local news broadcasters. Seems like it could be used when showing the location of a local or national news story. They could simply set a placemark at the exact location of the news story and fly right to it.

A while back we had a thread about how Google would attack the travel market, and whether we would see a Froogle for travel.

Now we get the answer, this is the ultimate interface for planning travel - being able to find what you want, where you want, and the more people using this, the more people will want to be found on it.

But will independent tourism business finally be able to get direct access to travellers without brokers and affiliates clogging up the channels?

Will it eventually hit the brokers and affiliate's margins, or will it be just yet another channel to spam?

On another note, if you load up the Keyhole Community BBS in the built-in browser, you can click placemark links and they will automatically in the earth viewer... this thing integrates really well with the web.

Looks to me like this thing could eventually BE google's OS...

Really nice. I adjusted the "tilt" so that I could see the horizon, clicked and dragged down so that I went into "fly mode" and "flew" from Bangkok to Chiang Mai. Looking at the landscape underneath, watching the mountains rise and fall.

Got to Chiang Mai and found Doi Suthep (famous temple) that I've visited many times before. What clarity. What a blast...Well done KeyHole/Google, this is great!

The overlays are the thing that make this so amazing. Someone has created one showing real time cloud cover over the globe (useful for tracking hurricanes). The buses in Boulder, CO have GPS units on board; someone else has taken that information and created real time mapping on the position of each bus.

The mind reels at the potential uses, particularly once this hits PDAs, mobile phones, and other portable devices.
