Backlinks increasing unexpectedly (very high)

Hi everyone,

My baclinks in the last 2 days went from 11 to 850, and I'm not sure how/why. All I did was add my site to domz.org and posted 3 articles on 3 blogs with about 30 backlinks total. I'm concerned because I heard Google penalizes these kind of activities.
Only on checkpagerank it shows 850 as of today, yesterday it was 530. On other sites such as ahrefs and Moz it still shows 11, I'm guessing it's yet to update.

Has this happened to anyone before? What actions can be taken so I may not get penalized?

Thanks

If you're on dmoz, you might have automatically been added to a gazillion dmoz clones. I wouldn't worry about 850 links myself.

If you are really worried you can always disavow the links.

@netmeg Thanks for the info, very helpful.
@goodroi I'm not any good at SEO as I'm just learning, So I'm not sure if I should worry or not. I will see how it goes in a week or 2, then perhaps I can disavow if it's going too high

Cheers

What does the Google Webmaster Tools' links report say about your links?

Are you able to confirm where these 850 links are coming from, or are you simply going by what checkpagerank tells you? I don't personally consider this tool to be accurate. Besides, you really need to know where the links are coming from, so I'd suggest running a proper link checker tool and analysing your backlink profile.

If @netmeg is right and the unusually high link number is due to the clones, then really no need to worry as most of them are not even indexed by Google. But that's all guesswork. Monitoring your links is a good practice.

@adder Google webmaster shows 51, and now checkpagerank is showing 560. So you're right, that site cannot be trusted on backlinks. Thanks for the info :)

I want to know how you guys are getting this information out of GMT. I've never gotten anything like this from GMT ever. It says no data available (always has) and I have a pretty large site that gets quite a bit of traffic. GMT is next to useless for me.
