One of my sites had been floundering in the SERPs for around a year now. Then suddenly I'm coming up top 5 for some really good KWs. The site has a few thousand pages.
What's wierd is the page Google is coming up with is the home page even thought there are pages for widgets of every colour of the rainbow.
Obviously it's an improvement but I'm a little confused

Over the past few months on sites I work with, I've seen more and more a trend to the the Home Page rather than the deep page in the Google serps. I've assumed that the value of on page anchor text is getting turned up way high, but that's just a guess -- not enough data here to discover a solid determination.

Sounds like the site has just turned a corner, and you now have enough links to your home page for it to rank, but not enough to drive your other pages. Could also be a failure of your internal linking structure.
