I've been busting my but to get links to increase my page rank.
But here, there is constant talk about how page rank means nothing and the G Toolbar means nothing.
If someone could answer these questions, I would be most appeciative.
1. True or False - There is a difference between Page Rank and Toolbar Page Rank.
2. If #1 is true, is there a site or tool that will tell us, not the Toolbar PR, but what are actual Page Rank is?
3. Does the Toolbar PR mean anything anymore? Do you guys still use it?

In my opinion:
1 - true, because tPR is updated from time to time while real PR seems to be updated more frequently and tPR never shows the latest PR value
2 - look at tPR after some months to see what PR was ;)) ... and check how often the page is spidered ... and analyze its backlinks ... but of course these aren't actually effective methods
3 - tPR means that your page had such PR value a few months ago

3) No, Yes. I use the toolbar to help gauge the on-line health of my site. The numbers are meaningless to me. But I don't run a link campaign that's based on PR.
PR is now just a commodity to sell text links...that's all. I think this has gotten under google skin and now they are cutting everybody off at the knees who have capitalized on their "baby" by throwing their baby (PR) out with the bathwater.

1. YES: the reason is that real PR is updated very often while toolbar PR is updated rarely (usually every 3-4 months)
2. I do not think there is one. If someone had invented this tool and sold it for 1 cent per measure, he would have become billionaire... :)
3. YES: the toolbar PR is useful indication for a site's general performance in G. This doesn't mean that Toolbar PR (TPR) is everything you need to measure a website: i.e. a page may have TPR=0 but this can be caused by the recent post of the page online.
PR has nothing to do with ranking in the serps.
Dear oldpro, I don't agree with you; maybe you are exaggerating.
PR had and still has a direct relationship with rankings but this does NOT mean it's the only factor that counts. For example, my main site has a high PR6 home page and #4 on 34,000,000 SERPs, passing many PR7 sites. This doesn't mean that a PR3 site would ever manage to be in my position.
Get all the backlinks you want, but it won't give you any staying power. Work on getting as many backlinks as you want and push that PR as high as you can...and be like a shooting star.PR is now just a commodity to sell text links...that's all. I have gained <<staying power>> exactly because of them for the last 2 years...
The fact that PR is used to sell text links does not mean that PR is useless anymore. Maybe it has less value than it used to have but I find it is still one of the main indications for a site's performance (this would need many notes but don't have so much time now).
