Without going into all the SEO (which I know about), I am curious as to why my site sits happily on page 1 of plenty of MSN searches but on google it is absolutely nowhere.

Googlebot send 2 hits to my website daily - it looks at robots.txt and then index.asp - then leaves. It is frustrating because the msn robot seems to hang around on my pages for at least 2 hours every day. My website is virtually unfindable in google. I have used some basic SEO techniques but I see no reason for google to hate me so much.

When i run an inbound link analyser yahoo, msn etc all find the appropriate inbound links - but google finds 0.

I dont think i have been blacklisted because my website is indexed but am very confused as to the problem.

Any ideas?

How old is your site? Maybe a Google sandbox effect?

If your site is new, it's not unusual for it to take long time to rank in google. People on this forum have been speaking about this for the past year or more. Some call it the sandbox - some say the sandbox doesn't exist.

If your site isn't new, then perhaps you've been affected by the most recent google update.

In either case, probably the best thing is keep adding content and getting backlinks and wait - either for your site to rank (if it's new) or for the update to finish.

The "link:" command in google is not reliable - it doesn't show all of the backlinks that google knows about - just a "sampling."

hmmmm - sounds like the sandbox. The site is pretty new - only 2/3 months old.

Its just very frustrating. When you say backlinks are those link exchanges? or just literally getting someone to link to me?

I have a new site that is ranking like crazy on MSN but still completely sandboxed on Google. MSN loves the fresh.

I have the exact opposite problem. We get thousands of hits a day from Google but are nowhere to be seen on MSN. It's more confusing than anything :)

By backlinks I meant external backlinks - ie, any links from outside your site to a specific page on your site - whether by a link exchange or by someone just deciding to link to you, etc. Lot of people think it's better to get non-reciprocal backlinks ("one-way" links). I happen to agree, but that doesn't mean that it's true.

I have the same problem - I started a new site in December, after last toolbar update it got PR 2, and usually it's #10 in MSN on its most targetted phrase, but when I was changing the content on main page every day, it climbed to #2 in MSN. In Google it's beyond first 1000 positions.

Maybe it's penalized for 12% keyword density for main phrase, maybe it's sandboxed, or the phrase is too competitive for new PR2 site.

I keep developing the site and adding the content, and after it's more completed, I'll submit it to DMOZ, and hope it will help.

Same with my site. Almost all SE traffic is from Google, and almost none from Yahoo and MSN. Any ideas why?

Just to give you some hope ... I launched a site in oct november that has been in the sandbox until today. It's now fully out and ranking in the top 100 on all terms. Previously it was nowhere to be seen in the top 100. Good rule of thumb is give a sandbox site 6-8 months to get out.
