Google has stopped allowing downloads of its Accelerator software, just days after it began offering the product.

Google cited capacity as the reason for putting the brake on downloads of the software, which is designed to speed the delivery of web pages. A message on the site said the company has reached its "maximum capacity of users and [we] are actively working to increase the number of users we can support".

And this is the best part of it:

"The software was launched on 4 May but within a day was causing concern among users when it transpired that it cached more data than many people felt comfortable with, enabling individuals in some cases to log into secure online pages of others."

However, I expect Google to launch another new application within a month or two from now aiming at the same thing: Collecting historical data!

Does anyone know for sure that the private cache header is actually working?

Interesting take on GWA (scroll down a bit):

First, Google doesn't (or hasn't yet) announced a beta then changed its mind. Every Google service that has begun as a beta turns eventually into an official extension of the Googleplex. Froogle, their comparison buying service, isn't going away, nor are image and video search or GMail. The same goes for this Google Web Accelerator.

Lets hope his predictions don't come true...

They've never put anything into beta (that I'm aware of) that was so problematic for so many webmasters.

It also didn't even pass the "smile test" when one asks if it's a real product with a real use.

I also hope it goes away.

It would be fascinating to get a glimpse of how it came to be. How long was it in development? Who created it, and within the Googleplex who was arguing for it and who argued against it. You gotta believe there was a real internal convulsion over this thing. With such an external uproar, their had to be factions inside that had real doubts about it to.

> Thank you for your
interest in Google Web Accelerator.
We have currently reached our
maximum capacity of users and
are actively working to increase
the number of users we can support.

is that their way of saying "we realized we screwed up with this, so now we're not letting anyone else download it?" :)

they made a big boo boo with it, but thats what beta is for, to find out where the problems lie, apparently the problems here were prett humongus. Can you imagine logging into hotmail and seeing someone elses mail, and then realising someone could be reading your mail! (Though admittedly i dont think hotmail is a good example as it was probably not affected, but you get the pciture) serious breaches in peoples rights and data protection.

Google web accelerator once again breaks the Alexa toolbar.. It took a few days after Alexa reset google's IP, but it's down hard again, Alexa is now blocking google's IP address.. Here's the message I get "We're sorry but you do not have permission to access null. Your IP address, 64.233.173.77, has been blocked due to a possible violation of our Terms of Service"

Gee I wish all the toolbars could play nice with each other!

Alexa immediateley unblocks Google's IP address, I didn't even ask them too... Maybe they are getting wise to what is going on.
