It used to be that googlebot would only fetch the thumbnails and not load the images, but now it appears that it took all large jpegs.
This translates into 800MB of traffic this month from googlebot due to jpeg download. Is Google images now caching also the large size images?
Doesn't it have to get the full-sized images from which to create the thumbnails?
Yeah, man. G imagebot has always taken our full jpg's. They make their own thumbnails out of those. It takes thumbnails on your site as well, because it takes everything it can find.
I noticed the imagebot was very busy a few days ago. I expect to have lots of new hotlinking happening soon.
How large were your pictures?
Full size images average 125KB, thumbnails 7-10KB

Well, I checked and Googlebot has created the its own thumbnails from the my thumbnails, not from the full size images.
I do however keep the full size images on separate sites (domains), because of space/traffic issues (I'm using three packages 500MB/50GB for cost reasons). The main site only has all thumbnails and html pages. This has been so for almost two years.
By the way, while checking again the logs of the past 12 months of all sites, I noticed that "full size grabs" actually already took place last October and this February.
