Ok. So, I understand that philantrhopic pertains to donations and humanity. But what is Google's motive? What is Google planning? Do anyone know? Get me on board. Thx.
just going for good PR i guess. making them seem like a nice company and not a money grabbing corporation.....

As I thought Google is planning to aid and donate to the world and help with humane causes, such as disasters....world medical research...world hunger...world pain (diseases and such)...etc. They have the MONEY...the POWER...and the RESPECT. If anyone can help...its GOOG

Personally, I am behind google on their quest to provide the worlds information in an organized way...
Even the business model itself has hints of philanthropy woven into it.
Especially noting the library additions to come: [webmasterworld.com...]
Children that rely on charties only to end up with incomplete libraries will soon be able to access all the information the world has to offer.
Sounds like the speed of learning is going to increase.

They could have the greatest impact on the world, by using the toolbar to provide computing cycles for finding cures to cancer etc.

You mean giving away the computing power of their unsuspecting toolbar users as a philanthropic gesture? How generous of them!
Me thinks this might be in response to negative pr from domain grab attempt ..
I seriously doubt that. Google's legal team is on auto pilot to some extent. They are bound to screw up at times.

Just think about why most companies have United Way campaigns, even though it is an incredibly inefficient charity. It is so they don't have to deal with whether their choices of causes offend various employees, customers or stockholders.
As for the Tax Shelter comment, the only people that suggest that have never considered the math. It is only a tax shelter if it is financially beneficial to you, which giving money to legitimate charities is not.
A tax shelter is where you get tax deductions, but you get to keep the value of your money, such as certain real estate or business transactions. Giving away $100 to save yourself $30 in taxes does not shelter your income. You have $70 less than if you had paid your taxes.
And with personal charitable giving, you can only deduct up to 50% of your taxable income in any given year. Certainly in the case of Bill and Melinda, they have given more than 50% of their taxable income just about every year, and have in fact given around 1/3 of their net worth.
As for "good PR", there are a lot cheaper ways to do that. Think about the billionares out there, many of them have a foundation. Can you even list 5 to 10 and tell me what they support?
Most of the foundations out there fly under everyones radar. You might read about them in an occasional article, but that is about it. And are you really going to connect a mention of Ellison Medical Foundation with the CEO of Oracle?
And I will tell you straight up, as someone that hates microsoft's business practices, that both Bill and Melinda really do give a damn about the good that their foundation is doing. And the public only hears about some small parts of what the foundation accomplishes.
If it was just for PR, they would do things that are popular. Much of what they are chosing to do is what governments refuse to do. Immunizing children in third world countries and working on water treatment to combat disease saves hundreds of thousands of lives a year, but they are lives that few in the United States really care about.
So, even if the people that start these foundations are doing it just for the PR or the tax breaks, I'm still all for it. They do a hell of a lot of good where it wouldn't have happened otherwise.
