Best endings for URLs?

Which ending is most fitting, .htm, .html?

Which ending would you folks prefer and why?

any others?

I tend to use the first for pages with subpages and .html for pages at the end of the line, but I really have no good reason other than I've seen other sites doing it. Any depth to add?
