No title and description in Google

My friend has a domain that has several hundreds pages in Google. He got a problem that some of the pages have no title or description. But in fact, he add title and description in the Meta area for all the pages.

Is this because those pages have duplicate contents and are penlized by Google?

It's probably not a penalty. Two of my sites had that happen to them just before Christmas, and you can search through the archives to find lots of threads on this very topic.

In my case, I moved one site to a new domain, which cured it instantly, and the other site gradually came back all by itself, with no changes to the page contents.
