pr domains multiple

Hi all,

I know that multiple domains on the same IP pointing to each other can be "problematic".

However, say I have 3 domain names, and set up DNS aliasing on my server, so that the same site responds

Site 1 has a PR of 6
Site 2 has a PR of 4
Site 3 has a PR of 3

...in your opinion, would I gain from having them all point to the same site/server or should site 2 & 3 be put on a seperate server with just a link to site 1 for maximum benefit?

Thanks

I know that some webmasters have reported problems in this field, but personally I have never had any though I have websites that both have the same IP and are rather comprehensively interlinked. Perhaps it's a question of having a "natural" linking structure as opposed to one that is built specifically for the purpose of boosting the PR? I am sure that different linking patterns are recognizable.

At least I can say one thing for certain: Having two or more websites at the same IP link to each others does not IN ITSELF create problems with Google. You have to do something more to get into trouble.

Oh, I forgot: Welcome to WebmasterWorld. :)

Right now I wouldnt recommend aliasing the domains as I , as well as many other very established old authority sites have had our sites split into pieces due to some programming change Google has made - we all ended up having to end up 301'ing the domains to the real domain and removing the other domains using the Google removal tool, and 8 weeks later we are just starting to come back.
Im not positive, but I believe that it started sometime around July of 2004 with something they changed in their dupe algo or possibly even the googlebot programming response that caused this, but I can tell you for sure that it would not be a good course right now. This includes both aliased domains (also called stacked domains) that are either in or out of the zone files.

Oops! Seems I misread the question. Sorry. Bedtime.

One of my clients, on a site that I had taken over, had over 30 domains all pointing to the same site via DNS. If you include the WWWs, that would be a total of 60 domains. They could never understand why they would end up on page 48 of the SERPS for their money phrase and their PR never got above 0 on the home page. This site was about 6 years old. I suggested that they point all the domains to an IP with a 301 to just one of the domains. I included all the www sites as well. Within 4 months the PR of the home page hit 5 and they are now #7 in the SERPs for the money phrase.

Made me re-evaluate the way I was doing some other stuff as well...

Just a small update - 3 of the sites that followed that regimen to direct everything to the main domain have now come back and are flying high (usually in the #1 and 2 spots for their terms) and actually Im the only one that still has a small problem with my index page still having a &filter=0 on it for one term - ranks great for all the other terms - including two term phrases that include that one term that filters out my page

Marval - Can you give just a little detail on how you merged your sites?

I think I was whacked by the &filter=0 dupe content filter myself.

I developed my new database driven product site on a seperate url, got indexed by yahoo/msn, moved the pages over to my main site and ...yada yada yada... as of Feb 2nd I tanked from #1 to #100 on most terms.

Of course, I get lots of traffic from Yahoo and MSN on the newer site, so I don't want to take it down or I'll have absolutely no traffic.

How do I merge the two URL's?
