I absolutely did not like it as I felt it junked the search result page IMO. If I wanted to search for images, I would use Google's image search.
Honestly and a little off the point - I think Google should hire Hillman Curtis (or someone) to build a user friendly site that implements all Google's tools and candy... Rather than trying to find a place to stuff - this and that - here and there. For a search engine I am surprised Google's content organization is not better.
Maybe it is time for Google to set up a my.google interface, with auto-headlines from Google news, most popular images, etc...
That would be a great way for them to identify heavy users and early adopters, to push new product trials out quickly, and to keep their main page clean and simple.

I have believed this is a great idea. The user could opt to have the default index page as-is or, opt to have it all!
Why not? How many typical users find themselves bored to death so they head online. Google as popular startup screen for most browser could offer their public something sticky.
Meanwhile I receive more visitors via google images search than by any other searchengine. There is a number of (though less important) search terms in my niche where I seem to have the monopol in google images (*g*). I was also surprised how google managed to identify that most beautiful image on widgets from my start-page, although in contrast to some other images on the same page the alt-tag of that image does not contain the term "widget".
I think there is something on the way in that area considering that - if I remember correctly - Bill Gates dropped some hints on what we should expect from search engines in the future particularly concerning video search.
I wonder whether pattern recognition has evolved in such a manner that algos may identify - say - the face of Michael Palin within an mpeg-file.
If we take into account what is on the way with respect to our passports and such documents this does seem quite likely. The question is: to what extent has this been elaborated and synchronized with what is called "world knowledge" in research on artificial intelligence.
Can you imagine an algorithm, which is able to identify the "Gestalt" of a given object from a new picture? Was the last crawl so intensive because google has swallowed all the images and fed a neuronal network with the results? Has your page, so well text-optimized for blue wooden widgets, suffered in ranking recently, because google had found no image of a blue wooden widget on it?
As I said: Currently almost a tenth of my visitors comes via google-images, more than from any other search engine except google.
And then: Competition with MSN?
