%20 is the URL-Encoded-Format of a blank space (hex 20 = dec. 32)

That URL must appear in someone's page somewhere. It might be on one of your internal links, or it might be on somone elses site. It's going to be hard to track it down.

Google keeps a record of every URL that it has ever seen as outbound links from every page that it has ever crawled. It keeps a record of all URLs whether or not they work, as it has to keep a record of the status of that URL as well as occasionally revisiting it to see if the status changes.

If I link here to [make-up-a-fake-domain-on-2005-february-19th-and-post-it-in-this-thread.com ] then you will see in just a few days time that Google will know something about this URL even though it leads nowhere.

I thought %20 was for a hyphen. Whenever I find this in a URL in my referrer logs if I replace it with a hyphen it works.

Search engines consider a hyphen a space so maybe that's why.

I found the 20% once in my allinurl and what it was was a malformed <href statement on one of my pages.
