Does Google recognize 410 error code? What is better to return for permanently removed pages 404 or 410?

I have used the 410 and Google removes the pages, so it works. I didn't see any difference in the speed of the 404 and 410, but there might be.

The fastest way after marking pages 404 or 410 is to submit the URLs to the Google urlconsole removal tool. Removal will be between 1 and 4 days.
