Google put out a press release today that was mostly ignored by everyone.

Google released a new feature that displays images from Google Image Search above Google web search results when they're relevant to users' search queries. When users search for queries such as [sunsets], [mountains], [torre eiffel], or [inverno] on the Google homepage, they may see relevant thumbnail images at the top

I had a look at it and it looks incredible. Extremely fast map loading and the business pop-ups are awesome (looking).

Too bad it's unlikely to ever see even a beta release here in Australia.

adding the images to the search is not biggie, IMO, just a PR stunt.

The maps looks amazing Googleguy...Congrats to Google. Personally (maybe for selfish reasons), I wish you guys would concentrate on the search though. Many index pages, including mine are essentially MIA.

I disagree. Those images give 2-3 top SERPs to those that optimize their images for the image search.

And, they push #4 below the fold.

That, IMHO, is a big deal.

Now they need to add an entertaining "show current number of Google searches occuring from this area" to the maps ;) Kinda like the fancy projection they had on the "60 Minutes" segment but the "play at home version".

That's what gooogle.com sais with the browser I use here. Using Safari (that has never been referred to Google from Webmasterworld) the same string reads

maps.google.com -- simply unbelievable. In my wildest dreams I did not think I'll see a map that you can drag and pan with a mouse in a web browser. No words..

And "search within the map below" -- man, oh man, ...

I like some of the features of the map program. However, having tried it to get directions, I can tell you that it is clearly not ready. For the trip I looked up, it made me drive 440 miles, while MapQuest can get me there in only 280 miles!

For those of us who like the countryside, it would also be a lot better if the county roads were labelled.

yeah but the press release was to the main public, not SEOs. I mean that the images were there on another tab and adding is not a technological feat.

The maps, are a different story. now we're talking.
One suggestion: "remember my address" feature instead of typing it everytime

Clean content is great but someoen has to pay to keep the lights on.

Here is another example: going from Houston to Texarkana. Google maps thinks that you should first drive to Forth Worth... lol!

Going to also add that the directions are slightly skewed - from Toronto to New York had me going around the lake instead of directly crossing the border :). But it is very interesting how this integrates into local search - look forward to it.

Good feedback, walkman and Spica. I'm sure the maps folks will check out any non-optimal driving directions you wanted to mention..
