Problem Logging In Using Internet Explorer

Browser must be set to allow javascript to set cookies

Hi, everyone. First post here.

I couldn't find a way to search just the Gmail forum (or just Webmaster forums, for that matter). Am I missing something?

Anyway, when I try to log in to Gmail using an IE-based browser, I get the following error:

In order to login to Gmail, your browser must be set to allow javascript to set cookies.

Even if I set both Security and Privacy to Low in IE, I still get this error. I have to use Firefox to log in.

Has anyone else seen this?

Thanks.

Maybe you didn't allow cookies set by "google.com" in the past. And as far as I know GMail works with a few browsers only due to ActiveX requirements.

Can you not log in in spite of the error message?

I've occasionally gotten the cookies error when trying to change preferences at a couple of the data centers - but the preferences still got changed anyway.

Thanks for the replies.

No, I'm not able to log in once I get the error message. I'm just dumped right back to the login screen.

I don't think I've ever disallowed cookies for Google. And while it's true that some browsers don't work with Gmail, IE 6 is definitely supposed to!

I got the same error repeatedly, but then added gmail to trusted sites. Make sure you add gmail.google.com, and not just gmail.com or www.gmail.com - that seems to do the trick for me. For the moment, at least.

This thread has a nice way of using G to search WW:
[webmasterworld.com...]

If you add "Google Gmail Advertising", to the search string, then the majority of results will be from this forum.

Disable your firewall, mcaffee/norton/etc security, and then try to log in. If you can, then the settings you need to change aren't IE, but other security settings.

Thanks for everyone's replies.

I haven't replied sooner because it was impossible for me to view the thread. I just tried it using FireFox, and no problem.... I don't know if this is related to my other IE problem....

Here are some more details:

I've been using RoboForm to log me in (after clearing the cache). I tried to do it manually to see if it made a difference. I have found that I CANNOT change the focus to the input boxes! If I click in either box, absolutely nothing happens. The ONLY way I can log in is by using RoboForm.

After logging in, if I sign out or close the browser and try to log back in, the "Sign in" button has disappeared. If I try to log in anyway, the screen refreshes and displays the login again (minus the "Sign in" button).

If I then delete a SINGLE file from the Temporary Internet Files folder--the logo.gif file associated with the gmail URL--the button is back and I am able to log in again.

I even switched users and found that I was still unable to click in the username box.

I can still log in using Firefox with NO problems, though!

I'm getting more and more confused.

BTW, thanks for your suggestion, vkuehne. It sounded as though your suggestion might work, but I added [gmail.google.com...] to my trusted sites, and it didn't help....

Blow away your PC. This will get rid of whatever program you're running that is causing this. Reinstall, remove IE, use Fire Fox. Problem solved!

Well, maybe adding to trusted sites didnt do the trick either - I can confirm the same behavior with appearing and disappearing login button. Just reload the page a few times, in the end it will show up :-)

bodyrock,

Adding them where?

I've tried everything up to and including reinstalling IE and XP. Still no luck.
