I thought it was my computer being screwy, but then I tried the roommates and still get the same error that tells me to try again in a few seconds.
luckily I have not been dumb enough to keep trying every few seconds, but it would be a whole lot nicer if my account worked at least as good at the junkie hotmail...

I want to like Gmail. Other than this I really like Gmail. Froogle was beta forever and now what is different than the Froogle that was beta a few months back?
To attach the word beta to something and then not have it work for days straight is rather frustrating. I do have my primary email set to another account, but some people might be sending stuff to my gmail account and right now I wouldn't know. Even with some forwarding set up I still would have no idea if the stuff was forwarded.
I generally say possitive things about Google because as a company I like them a bunch. On the web isn't everything really in some sort of beta.
How many programmers do you know that say PERFECT. Microsoft Windows usually takes a few updates to get it down. They still release their product knowing that it will have errors that will be found, but the errors usually don't randomly say "try back in a couple seconds (I won't work for days)"
It is fine by me if it doesn't work for days. That message should tell me to try back in a day or two, and not a few seconds. That is like me switching lines on a customer. switching back and telling him it will just be a sec and then talking on the other line for a couple hours. in that case I lose a customer.
The message should match the actions. Beta ...sure. I am down sometimes...sure. Try back in a few seconds, in this senario that is...um...kinda...crap."
fully see where you are coming from here,
unfortunately cant get hold of any Gmail staff to get an answer.
however I have asked 5 other people in different parts of the globe about this, and they have all logged in OK.
I realised you tried a roommates, but have you tried anyother PC to log in.
might be an ISP issue (clutching at straws here)
good luck, keep us informed.
