Gmail in Adwords

Is Google competing with their own advertisers?

Has anyone seen the top Adwords result for "webmail"? That's right, Gmail right smack-bang at the top. I guess Google has a right to do as they please on their own site, but if I were an advertiser bidding for "webmail", I would be seriously upset about this.

I had to use a proxy service to view the ad, as in London we we were not seeing it.

does this mean that the ad basically leads to an invite?

or is just brand building?

Brand building.

Search "google marketing".

For a second I thought that the ad led to a sign-up page and that more people could join for free, but it does not. Branding is the only explanation.

I can't say that it surprises me. I think Yahoo does this with its Overture results too.

Are Google even charging for Gmail clicks?

Hmmm. I don't think it's strange at all, at least for now. Remember that it's still in Beta, so even if you go to Gmail's home page, you still can't sing up...yet. I think it's just a way to get people interested? Also, consider that the cost of Gmail invites on eBay are quickly rising--it's obvious that the "buzz" is working.
