Of course I had to go try it for myself, I got in no problem. Good thing too because I had an old unused personal account from a few years ago that I didn't want to delete until I was sure everyone had my new email address.
Well I logged in okay no problem, site was up. Checked my inbox that hadn't been checked for over a year, nothing from anything important.
Found account settings to delete account, am I sure?! Yep! Gone -- I'm free! :)))))))

That problem was relatively short lived. For those that rely on gmail it must have been a frustration, i'm sure.
