I think the point of doing this is to cut back on the spammers. By linking multiple accounts to the same number they can see if it is a spammer.bot creating the accounts.
After all, they do register accounts that a legitimate person might be interested to have.

In last couple months I had rec'd a huge number of spam emails from bogus gmail acc'ts. At same time, I was finding more and more that my outbound emails from my Gmail acc't were going to other people's spam folder...not a good trend. I figured Google would try to do something to stop the tarnishing of Gmail's reputation. Glad they have. Hope it works. I was already thinking, oh no...now I have to swap my main acc't for something else and I have a lot of info@website.com email forwarded to my gmail acc't right now and it would be a lot of work to re-structure everything. Plus I love Gmail..I am so accustomed to it :o)

Now? I thought that was always the way it was- cell phone or get invited by someone who already had a Gmail account.
