We're aware of a problem with Gmail affecting a small subset of users.
The affected users are unable to access Gmail. We will provide an
update by February 24, 2009 6:30 AM PST detailing when we expect to
resolve the problem. Please note that this resolution time is an
estimate and may change

I'm down as well.

I was able to download the inbox using POP mail but can't get into Gmail itself.

Google Mail Users Hit By Outage [news.bbc.co.uk]
Business and consumer users of Google's popular e-mail service were hit by an outage on Tuesday.

The service went offline at 0930 GMT with Google saying it was "working hard to resolve this problem".

In a statement, Google said "a number of users" were having problems with Google Mail.

"We know how important GMail is to our users so we take this very seriously," it added.

Funny. I told a couple of friends that I moved some Mail accounts to Google. They all asked why I would dare and let them have the most personal data that I have.

I told them that I'm convinced of their reliability and that I regard every E-mail that's sent through the open jungle as "public" anyway.

One pro-argument gone.

It's much bigger than "...a small subset of users"

There are reports coming in from all over the world including Europe, India & South America on the Gmail blog.

It's out in Japan as well, but I can access it via my phone (SoftBank). I can send and receive mail on my phone like normal.

Time to install Gmail offline for all my accounts.

The whole time it was down I noticed that I was able to access everything via POP3 and IMAP. Sending and receiving worked normally. Just the web interface was out of commission from the looks of things on my end.

Points to consider:

  • I think I shall enable the Offline function for all my accounts.

  • I have all my accounts set for POP3 or IMAP access. I've always got a complete backup on Outlook.

  • I may reconsider putting more accounts on Gmail. The problem is that neither Yahoo Mail or Hotmail have anywhere near the functionality of Gmail. What's a good alternative?

Looks to have been caused by the implementation of 'add your own themes' function.

    From The Economic Times [economictimes.indiatimes.com]

The temporary crash of Gmail affected office work across millions of offices around the world as a large part of the official mail is often carried on Gmail. In India, the Google email service provider is also used by government officials.

Does the Indian government really run on a free beta service?

They probably are a customer of Google Apps which isn't free for large organizations.

Yes rohitj, is correct. I wouldn't consider it cheap either.

It's a shame paying customers get hit with lockouts and outages just as much as us getting the free(ads) ride.

Google is offering 15 days of credit for customers of the paid version to compensate for the outage:
