Just noticed this:

Automatic forwarding to another email account
We're testing a new feature that lets you forward new incoming messages to any email account you want. It's free during the test and you can set it up in seconds. Even set up filters to forward only some of your messages. It's your mail. Get it the way you want it.

"It's free during the test"? Meaning they will charge later?

Makes you wonder...

Why would a free service that relies on ads give you the option to forward your emails? Doesn't make sense!

Maybe they are going to forward it "with the ads intact"?..(or without ..later ..for a fee )?

seems what they are testing is really no different than some other free email, one level is free, more service level is at a fee.

Take the big Y portal. IIRC, basic email is a freebie but if you add a bell or whistle to it, i.e. forwarding capability, then you're into their premium service at a fee.

I am surprised there isn't an ad on the forwarded message.

It would make sense for them to charge for the forwarding service. Keep in mind the reason they are providing the free service in the first place - it is a medium for them to place targeted ads. They can't very well forward the ads with the mail, so the user should make up for the loss. =)

(I really don't like the idea either, but you've got to look at it through their eyes.)
